Sygration Generation Market Simulator

Overview

The Generation Market Simulator is a tool for evaluating Energy and Operating reserve bids using market and congestion data collected continuously for the Ontario electricity market.  Dispatchable generators must provide the IESO with energy and (optionally) operating reserve bids such that IESO systems continuously send dispatch instructions to the participant based on the current market prices and any transmission constraints at their resource.

The simulator uses historical data collected continuously from the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and retained in the Sygration data warehouse. It allows a user to test their bids and evaluate what their dispatch quantities and revenue would have been had those bids been used for real. This allows the user to understand the impact of certain bids and develop their bid strategy that improves their revenue from the electricity market. In addition, the Simulator can generate a comparison of its output against actual historical generator output data (collected hourly by the Sygration data warehouse); allowing companies to determine how their competition is pricing their electricity into the open market.

The simulator analyzes the historical 5-minute data for the location of choice to determine several key measurement quantities and revenues:

Simulator Input Screen

The Simulator Input Screen is the main screen where the user enters the bids and offers for energy and operating reserve – different bids can be used for the days of the week, to emulate the use of Standing Bids. The bids are almost identical to that used in the actual IESO system, including the price-quantity laminations, ramp rate triplets, and daily energy limits (only the NERC tag is not used by the simulator). The target delivery point is selected by the user, along with the desired start and end dates for study period. Finally, the user can select what data he wishes the report to include before submitting the information to the Simulator.

Features

The algorithms used within the Simulator are based on the same Joint Optimization process and rules used by the IESO in its Dispatch Scheduling and Optimization (DSO) application. All calculations within the simulator are executed using 5-minute data, using any one of the 240 available delivery points. In addition to support of rules used by the IESO DSO, the Simulator includes several other features;

Sample Report – Hourly Resolution

All simulator calculations are done on a 5-minute basis, however as this report shows, the user may choose to view the results summarized on an hourly or daily basis. For this report the user has selected to include the various Market Prices (Energy, 10-minute spinning OR, 10-minute non-spinning OR, and 30-minute OR), Dispatch Quantities (MW for Energy and the three OR's), Settlment Credits ($ for Energy, the three OR's, and the Congestion Credits/CMSC). See the Abbreviations Reference for an explanation of the terms provided in the report.

Sample Report – Monthly Summary & Hourly Profile

Along with the detailed report data (5-minute, hourly or daily) is included a monthly summary and a 24-Hour Profile. The monthly summary shows average prices and MW quantities, along with total settlement credits for each month in the study. The 24-Hour Profile provides the same format but groups the results by hours in the day.

User Access

Access to the Simulator is intended for licensed users only. Registered users will be granted access to the Delivery Point data they require and have licensed. Guest users may access the simulator, however, they will be limited to 15 days of data using the BRUCEB-LT.G5 Delivery Point. Contact Sygration to arrange access to the data you require for your analysis.
